Gus, a vice-ridden Ranger-savant, and Call, a hardheaded, dutiful loner, serve as our wonderfully flawed guides as we follow the Rangers from their youthful beginnings through the end of their adventurous careers. McMurtry’s Western novels take readers through the second half of the nineteenth century, focusing on a group of endearing Texas Rangers steered by two of the most unforgettable heroes of contemporary fiction: Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call. Yet few have captured the American West in literature better than the Pulitzer Prize–winning author Larry McMurtry, creator of the famed Lonesome Dove tetralogy. Countless tales, portrayed in nearly every medium, have compelled audiences with depictions of the frontier in all its wonderful grit and glory. ![]() American culture has always been fascinated by the Western landscape. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The only obvious parallel with the Potter books is that, like them, it is animated by a strong dislike of mean, unsympathetic, small-minded folk. Set in the "pretty little town of Pagford", it is a study of provincial life, with a large cast and multiple, interlocking plots, drawing inspiration from Elizabeth Gaskell and George Eliot. Generally, though, The Casual Vacancy is a solid, traditional and determinedly unadventurous English novel. The new book contains regular outbursts of four-letter words, along with the memorable phrase "that miraculously unguarded vagina" – which, leaked in a pre-publication profile, has caused a flurry of jokes on Twitter about Harry Potter and the Miraculously Unguarded Vagina. There are some superficial excitements here, in that the younger characters get up to things that Harry probably never dreamed of: taking drugs, swearing, self-harming, having grimy casual sex, singing along to Rihanna. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 100 Women Britannica celebrates the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment, highlighting suffragists and history-making politicians.COVID-19 Portal While this global health crisis continues to evolve, it can be useful to look to past pandemics to better understand how to respond today.Student Portal Britannica is the ultimate student resource for key school subjects like history, government, literature, and more. This Time in History In these videos, find out what happened this month (or any month!) in history.#WTFact Videos In #WTFact Britannica shares some of the most bizarre facts we can find. ![]() Demystified Videos In Demystified, Britannica has all the answers to your burning questions.Britannica Classics Check out these retro videos from Encyclopedia Britannica’s archives.Britannica Explains In these videos, Britannica explains a variety of topics and answers frequently asked questions. ![]() ![]() ![]() Selznick divides his time between Brooklyn, New York, and San Diego, California. The best thing about this book is Spencer's attention to her heroine's emotional life, a recently deceased mother, a distant and preoccupied father, a move from urban New York to rural Tennessee. The chapters are peppered with inconsistent appendices - activities that extend the action, Try this at home! - an interesting idea that falls a bit flat in my view.
